The Mzee wa Kijiji are the respected elders of the Makonde clan. In their society, decisions are seldom made without informing and getting the approval of these elderly few. The village elders are selected by way of popular vote. In many cases however, those who can provide greater wealth to the village are selected. This carving brings out the experience and wisdom of the Makonde. The hand carved Makonde abstract of the elder also sees him hold a calabash, also symbolic to the people of the tribe.
